POLICE are appealing for Land Rover owners to be extra vigilant after an increase in thefts of the vehicles in the Todmorden area.
Officers believe that vehicles, particularly the older models, are being targeted mainly for spare parts.

Superintendant Stan Bates, of Calderdale Police, said: "Crime levels are very low in Todmorden and we are only talking about a handful of vehicles – but it is clear that a pattern is starting to emerge.

"In rural areas four by four vehicles are obviously a very important part of daily life and we are urging owners to take extra care."

Advice includes locking doors, not leaving valuables on show and, where possible, leaving the vehicle in a secure, locked garage. If your vehicle has an alarm fitted then make sure it is activated.

Supt Bates added: "Local Neighbour Policing Team officers are out and about, keeping an eye out for suspicious activity and speaking to any Land Rover owners they meet to offer advice.

"But we would also ask the public to help us out by reporting suspicious activity to us and if you are offered old Land Rover parts for sale at cheap rates. If it is too good to be true then it usually is.

"We have already recovered two stolen vehicles and are on the hunt for others."

Anyone who is offered parts for sale or witnesses parts and or vehicles being taken can ring West Yorkshire Police on 0845 6060606.
