New Web Site
Hello All,
As you may have noticed, we have a new web site.
After a fairly static design lasting about 4 years, it was suggested that a little sprucing up was needed.
The focus that has guided us is creating a social network for members, make it easy to self publish, create a resource for members, and make it more dynamic.
We have a completely new Content Management System (AKA The back-end that makes the site work), and that will give us a lot of flexibility with new features, including:
- Image Gallery: Much more flexible and will allow each member to have their own gallery, or to upload to the other categories
- Videos: There is now a very advance video area where you can upload your videos and share them with just members or the general public
- Library: A comprehensive library including a location to share files, track files
- Mobile Blogging: One of the requests that have been made repeatedly by members on expeditions has been the ability to easily post their days experiences on the site. What we have now is probably the most versatile solution, allowing posting directly from a mobile phone using MMS or e-mail or from a simple email program. Send a message with the text you want and attach any photos or video and it is immediately (actually it can take a couple of minutes) posted on the site. It is easy to see how this could make it very easy for someone that is not very technical, or has limited Internet availability to publish their experiences on the road. A tutorial is in the works, and will be posted in the member's only area of the site.
- Mailing List Management: There is a great deal of unevenness when it comes to people's comfort with managing their mailing list membership. Forums do have the advantage of creating a easy to follow thread, and segregate info, so people only need to read what is of interest to them. However, forums are also an active media, which requires the user to visit the web site and read the posts available. This is not always appealing or possible, so the Members mailing list fills the role, at this time, of the primary communications between members. My hope is that we will be able to move some of the dialogue to the web site forums, and use the mailing list for more immediate notifications, that the forum may be inappropriate for.
- Much, much more...
There is more to come, including integration with Facebook and Twitter. And as always, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions please let me know.
I would also like to extend my thanks to Tim, Chris and others that offered their assistance in getting things up and running.
Victor
